Start with acoustics, not decoration
A studio can look impressive and still sound bad. What matters is whether the room has been treated to control reflections and low-end buildup — foam panels, bass traps in the corners, and a vocal booth that does not sound boxy. Ask to hear a raw, unprocessed vocal or instrument take recorded in that exact room before you commit. If the studio cannot show you one, that is worth noting.
Check the engineer, not just the equipment list
Expensive microphones and interfaces do not fix a poor signal chain or a rushed mix. Ask who will actually be behind the desk during your session, how long they have been recording in that genre, and whether you can hear finished work they engineered — not just the studio's demo reel. An engineer who asks you questions about the song before pressing record is usually a good sign.
Match the studio to what you are recording
A studio that is excellent for hip-hop vocals is not automatically set up well for a live dholak-tabla session or a full folk ensemble. If you are recording Rajasthani folk instruments, bhajans, or a live band, ask specifically about their experience mic'ing acoustic instruments and recording multiple performers in one room at the same time.
Understand pricing and advance terms upfront
Most studios in Jaipur ask for a partial advance to confirm a slot, with the balance paid on the day or on delivery. Get clarity in writing (even a WhatsApp message) on what the advance covers, how many revisions are included in mixing and mastering, and what the turnaround time is. Vague answers here often mean vague delivery later.
Book a short trial session first
If you are planning a full album or a long-term relationship with a studio, do not commit everything to the first booking. A short, single-song session tells you how the engineer works, how the room sounds with your specific voice or instrument, and whether the studio's workflow suits you — before you invest a bigger budget.
